_ 'Wealth out of waste(WOW)' is a recycling project
initiated by ITC(paper board) in association with RAMKEY Group. ITC's Wealth Out of Waste is a recycling initiative that works
towards spreading awareness about recycling, and encouraging people to
segregate and dispose waste responsibly. WOW is fast spreading across cities in
southern India like Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai,
Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Guntur. Encouraged by its success in southern
states ITC plans to take its 'Wealth Out of Waste' (WOW) program across the
country.
The WOW programme seeks to not only build awareness, but also to encourage people to segregate their waste at the source which is their households. This reduces the amount of waste filling up the landfills - and provides industries with clean raw materials. At present they have been collecting wastes from 20,000 Houses and 100+ schools involving around 1.Lakh students. Their target is to recycle at-least 35% of the total 55,000 tons of waste (which is being produced in 6 big cities).
When we go into the facts and statistics of the Solid waste,
· Recycling of waste has huge environmental and economical benefits. Recycling of one tonne of waste paper saves 17 trees and 7,000 gallons of water.
· On an average a human being produces 600 grams of solid waste according to that only in Hyderabad almost 4000 tonnes of waste is being produced, and 30 % (1200 tonnes) of them being paper, Metal, glass and plastic.
· All the developed countries have already started the policy of zero solid waste and US and Europe have already achieved 70% of recycling targets and China about 30%, and India only 14%.
WOW initiative started in a small way in April 2007 with an average monthly collection of 100 tonnes per month is now spread across South India with an average monthly collection of 5000 tonnes per month with a potential of collecting 10,000 tonnes per month by the end of 2012 within South India.
Some more Statistical Facts:
Time taken by Specific Items to mix with earth:
“ Nothing is WASTE for us ”
According to statistics of the waste in our college.
There is almost 40 Kgs of waste from the canteen every day and every year a lot more paper ( records) will change its status to waste. So if we could recycle, i.e directly giving them to the recyclers, it would be a lot save in energy.

VRN in association with ITC limited, is conducting an event with 5000 volunteers to create awareness among twin cities. This event being conducted on 25th MARCH, 2012. For more details regarding this event click here.

Some more Statistical Facts:
- Recycling of one ton of paper results in the saving of 17 tress and 7000 gallons of water.
- Recycling
of one glass bottle results in saving of electricity which is equal to
electricity required to light a 100 watt bulb up to 4 hrs.
- Recycling of one tonn of plastic results in the saving of 2000 standard units of gasoline.
- 90% of the aluminum needs can be satisfied by recycling the metal.
- News print can be produced with 40% less energy by recycling.
- Plastic can be produced by 70% less energy by recycling.
And when the waste is not well managed and all the waste is just dumped into lands the land, water and mineral composition of the land gets disturbed and may result in ecological disturbances.
Time taken by Specific Items to mix with earth:
- Organic wastes: one week
- Paper: 10 to 30 days
- Cotton: 1 to 5 months
- Wood: 10 to 15 years
- Minerals: 100 to 500 Years
- Plastic 10 Lakh Years
